Empowering Artisans: Asha Handicrafts Celebrates World Fair Trade Day 2024
A couple of months prior to the celebration of World Fair Trade Day 2024, Asha Handicrafts initiated a photo campaign featuring artisans and staff members holding fair trade posters. These images were meticulously captured over several months to emphasize the importance of ethical consumption and promote Fair Trade values. When the day arrived, these photos were strategically shared across various social media platforms with relevant hashtags to engage a broader audience. In a momentous announcement, Asha Handicrafts emerged victorious in the Photo Action Competition organized by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), triumphing over 300 participants from across the globe.
At the Asha Handicrafts office, the festivities kicked off with an exhibition showcasing a rich array of handicraft products, all ethically sourced through fair trade practices. This vibrant display drew a considerable crowd, captivating both locals and visitors alike with its diverse offerings.
Small corner meetings held with local artisans and producers involved in fair trade practices at the craft centres lead by welfare workers. Discussions focused on the challenges faced by artisans, the benefits of fair trade partnerships, and ways to strengthen fair trade networks.
The visit aimed to provide NIFT students with insights into fair trade practices within the handicrafts export industry, aligning with the spirit of World Fair Trade Day. Engaging discussions were held between students and representatives from Asha Handicrafts. Topics included the impact of fair trade practices on artisan communities, challenges faced in implementing fair trade standards, and the role of consumers in promoting ethical consumption and importance of design and product development.
